STA Certificate in Swimming Teaching (Beginners)

The course is specifically aimed at those looking to gain employment in swim teaching. Holders of the STC [B] can teach up to 10 beginners, they may also act as an assistant teacher and may teach larger classes or advanced skills under direct supervision of a suitably qualified swimming teacher.

Aim

A stand-alone course to train swimming teachers in the special skills required when introducing babies and very young children to aquatic activities.

Pre-requisites

• Be 18 years of age, or older;
• Be a member of the STA;
• Hold either the "Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults" online programme (available online at www.trainsta.co.uk) or acceptable equivalent;
• Satisfactory complete the following Units:
Unit 1 - Aquatic Teaching Foundation;
Unit 2 - Baby & Pre-School.

Course Information

Unit 1-Aquatic Teaching Foundation
This unit covers the following topics:
• The legislative background, health, hygiene and safety;
• Child protection and integration of special needs pupils;
• The principles of teaching and planning, basic anatomy, physiology, hydrostatics and hydrodynamics.

Unit 2-Baby & Pre-School
This unit covers the following topics:
• The regulation background to safe Infant and Pre-School child swimming;
• Teaching methods and lesson plans for different age groups, from under six months to pre-school beginners;
• Techniques for entry and exit safety skills, submersion, jumping and diving skills;
• The transition from infant Aquatics with parents to independent swimming, with and without swimming aids.

Assessment
• Completion of end of unit worksheets to the satisfaction of the course tutor;
• Obtaining 22 marks from a 30 question multi-choice questions, each worth 1 mark;
• Completion of the Portfolio to the satisfaction of the course tutor;
• Undertake teaching a 10 minute lesson to a class of 2 to 4 parent-infant pairs.

STA Certificate in Swimming Teaching (Full)

This is the industry standard for those who wish to teach unsupervised and is essential for seeking employment as a swimming teacher. Once qualified, the holder will be able to teach groups of participants of a range of abilities utilising the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming.

NARS Pool Lifeguard Qualification
Duration:1 week - Intensive Course
Fee:£200

The NaRS Pool Lifeguard Qualification is widely recognized as the professional benchmark in the leisure industry and will provide you with the opportunity for employment at most UK Swimming Pools. The qualification also has widespread international recognition.

The qualification consists of two units:
Unit 1 - Aquatic Rescue Foundation Unit
Unit 2 - Pool Lifeguard

The NaRS Pool Lifeguard Qualification is awarded upon successful completion of both units and is valid for a period of 2 years. The candidate must attend the entire course and pass the assessment to be awarded the NaRS Pool Lifeguard Qualification.

The courses will take place during half term breaks during the school holidays, and you will be trained on all aspects of life guarding. The assessment will take place on the last day and will take approximately 4 hours.

Entry Requirements

• The candidate must be 16 years of age or older

• Be able to swim 100 metres on their front

• Be able to swim 100 metres on their back

• Be able to swim 50 metres in 1 minute

• Be able to surface dive and recover an object from the deepest part of the pool
